The course files are in Adobe Acrobat format. If Acrobat Reader, version 2.0.1 or later, is not present on your hard disk, use the Acrobat Installer provided on this CD-ROM before trying to open the files. For instructions on using Acrobat Reader, see below.
Equipment Needed For Some Exercises:
• One or more LaserWriter printers attached to your Macintosh computer over a network. Recommended: Apple Color LaserWriter (12/600 PS or later model).
• On your Macintosh: 8 MB RAM, System 7.1 or greater. (Desktop Printer Icons exercise requires System 7.1.1 or greater.)
• Recommended: Monitor capable of "thousands" of colors. Minimum monitor setting for adequate display of graphics: 16 grays.
A Note About Module 3, Color Printing Utilities
Since this course was written (June 1995), version 8.3 of the LaserWriter 8 printer driver has been superseded by version 8.4, which features a new look-and-feel in several areas. If you have LaserWriter 8.4 or later installed on your Macintosh, some of the illustrations and step-by-step instructions in Module 3 may not match what you see on your monitor. Nevertheless, the exercises in Module 3 can be completed and the information remains valid.
If your Macintosh computer is currently using a version of the LaserWriter driver earlier than 8.3, simply follow the steps below to install the 8.3 version of the driver, and complete the course using version 8.3. Later, when you have finished the course, install version 8.4.1 using the Installer provided in the Newer Printer Software folder, and familiarize yourself with its new features.
If you are already using version 8.4 or later, just be aware that you will notice some differences between the instructions and the 8.4 software, particularly in the Print dialog box and in the appearance of the desktop printer icons.
Installation Instructions:
1. Install the following software onto your hard disk, unless this or a more recent version is already present:
-Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 2.0.1 (use Acrobat Installer provided on this CD-ROM)
-QuickTime, version 2.5, and MoviePlayer, version 2.5 (use Installer provided on this CD-ROM)
NOTE: If you have too little RAM to run version 2.5 of QuickTime and MoviePlayer, you can use earlier versions of these applications, which require less RAM. QuickTime 2.0 and MoviePlayer 1.0 are provided in a separate folder inside the QuickTime folder. To install them:
1. Drag the MoviePlayer 1.0 icon to your hard drive.
2. Drag the QuickTime 2.0 icon to your computer’s System folder.
3. Restart the computer.
2. Install the Color LaserWriter Printer Software (version 8.3)
To perform the exercises in Module 3, you will need ColorSync 2.0 or later, the Apple Printer Utility (version 2.0 or later), and the LaserWriter 8 driver extension, version 8.3 or later. (The correct name of the extension is "LaserWriter 8, version 8.3," but it is usually called "LaserWriter 8.3" for short.)
We have included two versions of the 8.3 Installer for these applications:
• A "net install" version, which you can use directly from this CD-ROM.
• A set of four disk images, which can be used to create printer installer disks on 1.4MB floppy disks.
NOTE: If you are already using version 8.4 or later of the LaserWriter driver, do not install this software. When performing the exercises in Module 3, you will notice some differences between the instructions and the 8.4 software, particularly in the Print dialog box and the appearance of the desktop printer icons. Nonetheless, the exercises can be completed and the information remains valid.
If you are unfamiliar with the Installer, print these instructions now.
To use the Net Install version,
a) Turn off any automatic virus-protection software on your Macintosh nefore installing the software.
b) Locate and open the folder "Color LW 8.3 Net Install."
c) Double-click the Installer icon. A dialog box opens to describe the installation.
d) Click the Continue button to close the dialog box.
e) Click the Install button.
f) Follow the instructions on screen until the installation is complete.
g) Click the Restart button.
To use the disk image version of the Installer, follow these steps:
a) Locate and open the folder "Color LW 8.3 disk images" on this CD.
b) Double-click the file Printer Disk 1.image. This automatically opens the application Disk Copy 4.2, which is contained in the same folder. The opening screen of Disk Copy 4.2 will appear on your screen.
c) Click the mouse to make the opening screen disappear.
d) Click the Make a Copy button. Disk Copy will prompt you to insert a disk.
e) Insert a 1.4 MB disk. Make sure the disk is not locked. Disk Copy will ask if you want to erase the contents of the disk.
f) Click “Duplicate”. Disk Copy will make a copy of Printer Installer Disk 1 on the disk you have inserted. When the copy is done, Disk Copy will eject the disk. Label it "Printer Disk 1." If you see a message stating that the copy attempt was unsuccessful, try again using a different disk.
g) Follow steps 1 through 5 for the remaining three disk image files in the Disk Images folder. Label them Printer Disk 2, 3, and 4, respectively.
h) Lock all the Printer disks.
Once you have made the disks, proceed as follows:
a) Insert Printer Disk 1 into your Macintosh disk drive.
b) Double-click the Installer icon. A dialog box opens to describe the installation.
c) Click the Continue button to close the dialog box. If a dialog box appears, informing you of a problem, fix the problem before proceeding.
d) Click the Install button.
e) Follow the instructions on screen until the installation is complete.
f) Click the Restart button.
If you have any problems installing the software, try installing it again with all extensions off. (To turn extensions off, hold down the Shift key while you choose Restart from the Special menu. Keep the Shift key pressed until a message on your screen tells you that the extensions are off.)
Main Differences in LaserWriter Driver Versions 8.3 and 8.4.1
The main differences between LaserWriter 8.3 and 8.4.1 are:
• In version 8.4.1, the Print dialog box contains a new set of pop-up menus. These menus allow you to:
- Choose which printer to use (among the desktop printers that you have already created).
- Print to (create) a PostScript file instead of printing to a printer.
- Set printing options that were previously located in the "Print Options" dialog box.
• In version 8.3, all LaserWriters were represented by the same generic printer icon. In version 8.4.1, each type of LaserWriter that the driver can recognize is represented by an icon that resembles the actual printer.
• Version 8.4.1 adds a "Desktop Printers" pop-up menu to the Apple menu. This menu is an alternate way of opening a printer icon to see the status of current print jobs.
• Version 8.4.1 includes ColorSync 2.0.1. (LaserWriter 8.3 included ColorSync 2.0. For information on the minor differences between the versions, see "ColorSync Version 2.0.1 Changes" in the Articles of Interest folder on this CD.)
Using Acrobat Reader:
To navigate through an Acrobat Reader file, you can either use any of three methods:
1- The arrow keys on your keyboard
2- The icons provided at the top of the Acrobat window.
3- The scroll bar at the side of the Acrobat window.
To find a page quickly, click and drag the elevator in the scroll bar: A box will appear, telling you which page you are reading.

Other Files:
• The Course Test is a standalone application included on this CD. It allows you to verify for yourself that you have achieved the objectives of the course. Two versions are provided, one for 680x0 Macintosh and one for Power Macintosh computers.
• Interactive Color 1.6 is a stand-alone multimedia application created by the San Diego Supercomputer Center. It features a wide array of information about applied color theory, including sections that illustrate how monitors display color and how four-color printing works.
• The Newer Printer Software folder contains a net-install version of the most current LaserWriter printer software (LaserWriter 8.4.1, ColorSync 2.0.1, Apple Printer Utility 2.1.1).
• The folder Articles of Interest contains "ColorSync Software Overview," "LaserWriter 8.4 Printer Tips," "ColorSync Version 2.0.1 Changes," the Color LaserWriter 12/600PS User Manual, and other useful articles.
